A Roar of Engines, a Spirit of Service: Swanton American Legion Riders Rally for Battle Buddy Foundation
Once feared as the harbingers of chaos, the thunderous arrival of hundreds of motorcycles in a small town has taken on a new meaning in Northwest Ohio. Today, these engines don’t stir panic but pride—and this year, hope—thanks to the Swanton American Legion Riders and their Third Annual Battle Buddy Poker Run, which set new records while serving veterans in need.
A Revved-Up Tradition in Swanton
In the not-so-distant past, the sudden rumble of engines sent people scrambling—doors locked, curtains drawn, and valuables hastily stashed away. The reputation of biker gangs wasn’t exactly the stuff of community picnics. But time (and horsepower) have a way of changing hearts and habits.
On a bright Saturday morning, what might have been a cause for alarm became a scene of eager anticipation. Over 260 motorcycle enthusiasts converged from across the Midwest, some even journeying up from Georgia and South Carolina, gathering at Swanton Legion Post #479. Cameras flashed as families lined the curb, everyone vying to capture snapshots of the long, rolling caravan. The reason? The annual poker run—this year commemorating the event’s stunning growth and spirit of generosity.
Riding for a Cause: Supporting the Battle Buddy Foundation
At the heart of this high-octane gathering was a deeper purpose: the mission to support the Battle Buddy Foundation (TBBF), a nonprofit started by former Marine Kenny Bass. The TBBF’s goal is simple yet life-changing—raising funds to provide service dogs to veterans struggling with issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Bass, who overcame ten years of debilitating PTSD with the support of a service dog named Atlas, now pays it forward by helping fellow veterans find the same healing and companionship.
Three years ago, inspired by Bass’s journey, members of Swanton’s Murbach-Seifert American Legion Post #479 launched their own fundraising effort. That first year, they attracted about 125 motorcycles. This year, the event’s skyward trajectory continued—over 260 bikes, drawing participants from ten different Legions within a 75-mile radius, along with members of numerous other groups, turning the event into far more than a local affair.
- First year: 125 motorcycles.
- Second year: 183 motorcycles, $15,000 raised.
- This year: Over 260 motorcycles—and while the final tally awaits, expectations are high for another record-breaking sum.
The run itself kicked off from Swanton Legion, then visited the NCO Club at the 180th Tactical Fighter Group at Toledo Express Airport, followed by VFW Post 7424 in Wauseon, and finally the Swanton Sports Center before looping back. Along the way, riders gathered for group photos, enjoyed hearty meals, and participated in auctions—all while fostering the camaraderie that has become a hallmark of these events.
Poker Hands and Helping Hands
Riders weren’t the only ones participating. The event, chaired by ALR member Ron Wilson and his wife Lisa, drew support from Swanton’s Fire and Police Departments, ensuring a smooth (and safe) seven-minute grand exit. Legion Riders from throughout the region—up to ten Legions in fact—routinely support each other’s fundraisers. While most of these runs focus on veterans, some branch out to broader community causes, such as raising money for local school supplies.
This year, the success of the poker run sets a tall bar for the future. But judging from the enthusiastic turnout—and the ever-warming community embrace—Swanton’s American Legion Riders and their allies are up for the challenge. Next year’s event is already scheduled for August 25, 2018, and a word to the wise: don’t bet against them.
A Community Transformed by Service and Solidarity
No longer a sound of apprehension, the bikers’ arrival in Swanton marks a celebration of unity, service, and support for those who’ve sacrificed so much. Through these events, funds raised go directly to placing more service dogs with veterans, changing—and at times, saving—lives.
For the Swanton Legion Riders, as with many communities in Northwest Ohio, what was once feared now inspires hope. No wonder locals are advised to keep their cameras ready—not just for the spectacle, but for the spirit that rides alongside each engine’s roar. As other towns will surely attest, the hum of engines and the laughter of neighbors means something wholly new: a commitment to serving each other, at full throttle.
Want to get involved or support the Battle Buddy Foundation? Mark your calendars for August 25, 2018, and prepare to witness (or join) a parade of good will and good engines unlike any other.
